Socks and Sandals

We watched this counter-intuitive trend hit the runways last year when SS 2010 collections from Burberry, Hermes, and Dior showcased sandal-wearing models with… socks! A long time fashion faux pas, this trend seems to be breaking ground with models and celebrities alike.

The Trilby Hat Goes Hollywood

Looks like a new crop of A-Lister's have adopted an old trend from alternative musicians (and men from the 1920s). The Trilby hat is like the more commonly known Fedora but with a smaller brim. In black, brown, or gray, it can give your look an edge-iness typically reserved for rock stars.

Whatever your take on hat trends, personally, I'm thrilled that the knitted beanie has finally been replaced.

Debunking Skin Care Myths

With so much information, coming at us per minute on a daily basis it is no wonder that we don’t know what to believe anymore. What's fact and what’s fiction is so hard to uncover. Here are some myths that we feel we must debunk once and for all.

MYTH #1 IF YOU HAVE OILY SKIN AVOID PRODUCTS MADE WITH OIL
First of all - oils are not the same. The word oil is used incorrectly most of the time. An oil just means that the liquid was pressed from a fruit. For example some oils are sticky and block pores while others are not.

One thing that we may forget is that those with oily skin will continue producing oil as
our body is accustomed to it. If you strip the oil away, your body will read “make more oil” so the important note here is to ensure that whatever cleanser, hydrator you are using make sure that it does not strip your skin and leave it tight.

MYTH #2 THE HIGHER THE SPF THE BETTER
SPF 15 blocks out 94% of the UV rays. SPF 30 blocks out 97% of UV rays. An SPF of 2 block out 50% of UV rays. The most important aspect to remember is to find an SPF with broad spectrum coverage, this means coverage of both UVB and UVA rays.

UVB - medium wave-length and don’t penetrate beyond the superficial skin layers.
Responsible for delayed tanning and burning. Most solar UVB is filtered by the Earth’s atmosphere.

UVA – long-wavelength accounts for approximately 95% of the UV radiation reaching
the Earth’s surface. It can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and is responsible for immediate tanning effect. Furthermore, it contributes to skin ageing and wrinkles.

UVC – short wave-length is the most damaging of type of radiation, however, it is
completely filtered by the atmosphere and does not reach the earth’s surface. Just because we are going into the fall doesn’t mean you don’t wear an SPF during the day if you will be outside for an extended amount of time. Remember the sun reflects off of snow which can cause a sunburn.

MYTH #3 THE MORE SUDSY THE CLEANSER THE BETTER TO REMOVE DIRT
Foam and suds are great at removing dirt but some of us may actually be sensitive or allergic to the ingredients that foam or suds. Sulfates are the foaming ingredients that are used in shampoos and in skin care bar soaps and cleansers. Although most of us are not allergic to Sulfates, for some of us these ingredients may cause itching, dry sensitive patches on our skin. Look for shampoos and cleansers that are free from Sulfates or where the ingredient is not listed as the first ingredients (the less of it the better).

What's up with my Makeup!

Are you in your late 30’s or 40’s and thinking that once upon a time, 28 was over the hill but that now that just seems preposterous to you because you’re just feeling too groovy baby! And, wasn’t that just yesterday anyway? Well, for those of us that are in our 30’s or 40’s, who haven’t changed our beauty routine since then, we are probably thinking…what’s up with my makeup??? And, we are realizing the inevitable… we sure can’t wear makeup like we used to. A black smoky eye that was mysterious and sexy in your 20’s, now tends to look like you haven’t slept for a week! So, it’s time for a change! In our 30’s and 40’s, the biggest concerns tend to be fine lines, texture changes, dullness and unevenness in the skin.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION
These can be addressed by choosing the right foundation; one that doesn’t settle into fine lines, isn’t too matte or drying. Testing different brands can be time consuming and expensive and often produces unsatisfactory results. As pros, we’ve tried many products, and we suggest silicone based face primers and foundations. These have amazing staying power and they don’t settle in those fine lines that just appeared recently like an unwelcome stranger! “Test Subjects”, or shall we just call them our good natured and willing friends; have volunteered their lovely faces for us and have worn the stuff for 16 hours, run on treadmills for an hour and have even taken hot showers while wearing silicone based products. And, the results are now in… May we have a drum roll please…Silicone foundation just keeps on ticking! It doesn’t fade with a sweat inducing mama of a hot flash, streak down your face after an emotional outburst or rainstorm, smudge off on that humid summer day or travel where it shouldn’t! Voila, c’est magique!

Styling Tools 2- Hot Tools

This week Frank & Violet will take us through another in the line of important tools to have to achieve gorgeous hair - hot tools.
"Hot tools are what most people define as your blow dryer, curling iron and flat iron" says Frank.
You want to spend money and purchase professionals hot tools. They really do make a difference on your hair.

Blow Dryer

Here is probably where you will want to invest the most. A good blow dryer will set you back about $150-$200. Franks notes that. "when you amortize the cost of the blow dryer over a 5 year period, this is how long if not more your professional dryer will last, you are looking at $3.00 a month - that's crazy. Okay, you still have to shell out the $150-200 but trust me ladies a good blow dryer will work wonders on your hair.

Look for a ionic dryer. When the ceramic is heated it created ionic technology. These negative ions bond water droplets on the hair shaft. These water droplets become 1/50 their normal size where they are more easily absorbed by the hair shaft. Ionic blow dryers dry 50% faster and with 50% of the heat required by a regular dryer. Because of this it helps lessen split ends and frizzies and preserves more of your hairs natural oils.

Curling & Flat Irons

Whatever your weapon ensure that you again buy professional irons and look for new technology like ceramic. I am not sure they even make flat irons in the traditional non-ceramic way anymore" grins Frank.

Ceramic irons work in the same manner that the blow dryers works. Ceramic when heated produces negative ions. Ceramic flat irons also heat up faster and distribute heat more evenly and you can adjust the temperature to your hair type. But keep one thing in mind with ceramic irons - ALWAYS use on dry hair.

There is an Official Colour for 2010

For those not in the design industry, Pantone may not be a name you’re familiar with, but it certainly has had an influence on the colours surrounding you, from clothes to household goods to the colours used in ads and magazines. Founded in 1963, Pantone developed a system for standardizing colour matching for the graphic arts, but has since also become a global authority on colour for multiple design fields such as home, fashion, graphic and the web. And recently, Pantone announced the Colour of the Year for 2010 (drum roll please….)
